back in 1997 i was watching CBS newswatch late one night [remember when charlie rose was host? don't know what i'm talking about? it's the late late late late late news that comes on when normal people are catching their zzzz's...what can i say...i'm a night owl]. i remember the family of photo journalist dan eldon appeared, talking about their son and brother who died in somalia.
more about dan's story [from amazon.com]:
"In 1993, Dan Eldon was a 22-year-old Reuters photographer covering the severe famine and strife in Somalia when he was brutally murdered by an enraged mob. In a painful tribute to her son, freelance journalist Kathy Eldon has assembled and prefaced a somewhat offbeat, scrapbook-type publication containing collages, sketches, photographs, and written ruminations culled from her son's 17 journals. Born in England and raised in Kenya, Eldon comes through as an exuberant, passionate, handsome youth who was troubled by the world's violence and deprivations. He appears to have possessed a fearless spirit, and women were attracted to him. With Eldon prominently featured in an upcoming Turner-produced TV documentary on journalists at risk and with an exhibition of his work opening in New York, this book could attract a wider-than-expected audience and is recommended for general collections."
after watching their moving tribute to dan, i checked out the book online and decided to buy it. it is one of my most treasured books because the dan's art is beautiful and it tells his story. pouring over these pages for hours, i can see so much detail in his work.
i'm glad his family decided to share his art with the world. his family now has a website:
The Dan Eldon web site and travelling exhibit are part of Creative Visions Foundation. CVF was founded by Dan's friends and family, following his death working as a photographer for Reuters News Agency in 1993. CVF supports Creative Activists: people like Dan Eldon, who use media and the arts to raise awareness about critical social, environmental, and humanitarian issues impacting the world today and thus catalyzing positive and lasting change.
it's great to see that his name lives on and his art and life endures.
